With the approach of summer comes the conclusion of "trade show season." For the past four months or so, exhibitions have been held around the world -- promoting the use of stone and tile in design with endless product displays. And during this time, the staff here at Stone & Tile Design Insider has made an effort to attend most of these shows and report back on the newest collections and trends to hit the market. One of the most recent stone and tile exhibitions that I attended was Coverings, which was held in Orlando, FL, from April 29 to May 2.

Italian stone and tile manufacturer GranitiFiandre has expanded its patented Luminar collection with two additional color offerings -- OptoWhite and OptoBlack. The Luminar collection, part of GranitiFiandre's futuristic GeoStyle category of products, is a brilliant surfacing innovation that merges light energy with product design, according to the manufacturer.

A festive display of stone and tile at K/BIS and Coverings 2008

Technology and creativity are two of the driving forces behind product development, and judging by the stone and tile collections that have been introduced this year, manufacturers have been diligently working to create unique product lines that intrigue and inspire architects and designers. An assortment of the newest stone and tile products to hit the market were on display at two large exhibitions that took place this spring -- The Kitchen/Bath Industry Show (K/BIS), which was held at McCormick Place in Chicago, IL, and Coverings, a stone and tile exhibition held at the Orange County Convention Center in Orlando, FL.

Those traveling through the new South Terminal at Miami International Airport in Miami, FL, will be greeted by more than security gates and baggage claim carousels. Within the new structure is literally a work of art, which was created by sculptor Brad J. Goldberg of Dallas, TX. Titled "Coral Eden," the project features two expansive Italian travertine walls -- each stretching approximately 100 feet tall and 30 feet wide and intricately carved to resemble Brain Coral.

Decorative tile brings "Old World glam" to Manhattan residence

When recently designing a New York City apartment, Vanessa De Leon of Vanessa De Leon Associates in Ridgewood, NJ, was challenged to use materials that would ultimately "bring the old in with the new." And, in order to meet the desired design aesthetic, a variety of decorative tiles were implemented throughout the home. full article
Designed as a six-story office building with underground parking, Cherapa Place in Sioux Falls, SD, is a throwback to the city's 19th-century architectural materials as well as a testament to modern construction. The structure, which features a two-story base of regional quartzite, was created with the intention of achieving Gold LEED certification from the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC). And the stone used throughout the exterior and interior of the project -- quarried and fabricated by Jasper Stone Co. of Sioux Falls, SD, a subsidiary of L.G. Everist, Inc. -- contributed to meeting the overall goals for LEED certification.

Mosaico Italiano to offer sustainable living mosaics for Green House Building
Mosaico Italiano, a manufacturer of mosaics and tile, now offers a Reclaimed Brick collection. The eco-friendly collection is comprised of over 99% post-consumer brick gathered from historic buildings of old Chicago. Although the collection was originally introduced as only four mosaic designs in early 2007, it now features 3- x 6-inch subway tiles and an additional range of mosaic designs for a total of 17 design options.

Ergon Engineered Stone launches Green Tech Series
Officially launched at Coverings 2008, Ergon Engineered Stone, a brand of EmilCeramica S.p.A., has introduced its Green Tech Series product line. Green Tech is the result of an intensive research effort aimed at developing a product that delivers the highest in aesthetic appeal and technical performance, while maximizing the use of recycled material, reports the company. Tile of Spain celebrates 20 years
Tile of Spain celebrated 20 years at Coverings with over 50 ceramic tile manufacturers from Spain debuting their latest series and collections. And in honor of its anniversary, the organization showcased a new booth at the international stone and tile exhibition, which was held in Orlando, FL, from April 29 to May 2, 2008. Full article
Coverings celebrates Italian tile
After a six-year absence,
Coverings once again organized an Italian evening in the Hard Rock Café in Orlando, FL, giving Italian companies and their overseas customers the opportunity to meet. During the evening, which was hosted by the popular Italian singer and showgirl Luisa Corna and attended by more than 500 people, the Confindustria Ceramica North
America Distributor Award was presented to Jim Voegl from Conestoga Ceramic Tile Distributors in recognition of the firm's highly successful activity in distributing Italian ceramic tiles in the U.S. Full article
